Course Overview
The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism is designed for students passionate about the tourism industry. The course covers key areas such as the global tourism market, visitor attractions, and customer service. It includes internal and external assessments, such as coursework and a final exam.
This qualification prepares students for careers in the travel and tourism sector or further study in fields like business or hospitality management. It is ideal for students who enjoy working with people, are curious about global cultures, and have an interest in service industries.
The BTEC L3 National Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism is equivalent in size to one A Level. However, any student who solely completes year 12 of the course can be certificated and will gain a BTEC L3 National Certificate in Travel and Tourism equivalent to 0.5 an A level.
YEAR 1 (Certificate in Travel and Tourism)
Unit 1: The World of Travel and Tourism (externally assessed)
The travel and tourism industry in the UK is growing and is of major importance to the economy. Learners will develop the skills needed to examine, interpret and analyse a variety of statistics that measure the importance of tourism to the UK.
Unit 3: Principles of Marketing in Travel and Tourism (internally assessed)
Learners will explore how to develop a successful marketing plan for use by travel and tourism organisations to attract and engage with customers using research data.
YEAR 2 (Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism)
Unit 2: Global Destinations (externally assessed)
Learners will investigate the features and appeal of global destinations.
Unit 9: Visitor Attractions (internally assessed)
Learners will investigate visitor attractions and the different ways they are funded. They will explore what is meant by the visitor experience and how visitor attractions develop, diversify and use technology in order to meet the needs of their different types of visitors.
Assessments
The course is assessed through both internal and external assessments. Units are assessed internally through assignments, projects, and practical activities. Students submit portfolios of evidence demonstrating their understanding. Two units are externally assessed, one unit through an exam and one unit through controlled assessment tasks.

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism helps students develop a variety of skills. These include:
