Ian Brookfield – Foundation Governor

Ian Brookfield was appointed at St. David’s Catholic College in January 2013 as a Foundation Governor. Mr Brookfield has been a full time lecturer at Cardiff University for over twenty years and has considerable management, administrative and teaching experience to bring to his appointment. Mr Brookfield is a member of the Community, Curriculum and FGB Committees. 

Jane Croad - Parent Governor

Jane Croad was appointed at St David’s Catholic College as a Parent Governor in January 2016. A graduate of Manchester University with a degree in Biology, Ms. Croad worked in International Business for Johnson and Johnson based in Ascot and New Brunswick, returning to South Wales as Business Development Director for Wicker group and then Gwalia Housing Society. Ms. Croad lectured in International Marketing and Business in Cardiff Metropolitan University, retiring to complete her PhD on 'How small cities can attract and retain skilled people'. Ms Croad is a member of the Community and Audit Committees.

Michael Harper – Vice Chair and Foundation Governor

Michael Harper was appointed at St. David’s Catholic College in 2007 as a Foundation Governor before his retirement. Mr Harper worked in the Welsh Office and then Welsh Assembly Government, responsible for teacher recruitment, initial training and professional development. Mr Harper holds a Doctorate from Cardiff University that focussed on teacher in Further Education.

Mr Harper is a former Chair of Governors at Mary Immaculate High School where he served until 1999. Mr Harper believes strongly in the values that the College promotes and upholds. Mr Harper is a member of the Curriculum and Audit Committees.

Nigel Harris - Co-opted Governor

Nigel Harris was appointed at St. David’s Catholic College as a Co-opted Governor in September 2017.  Mr Harris has a BSc (Hons) in Management Sciences from Manchester University and is a Chartered Management Accountant.  After retiring he became a non-Executive Director of the Frontier Medical Group having previously been Finance Director and Managing Director.  Mr Harris is a member of the Finance, Estates, General Purposes and Personnel Committee and the Full Governing Body Committee.

Mr Michael Howells BA (Hons) DipEd – Clerk to the Governing Body

Mr Howells was appointed as Clerk to the Governing Body at St. David’s Catholic College in 1999. He was formerly Head teacher of Archbishop Mostyn RC High School and Mary Immaculate High School from 1987 – 1998. Mr Howells also served as the Wales Union Officer and Consultant for the Secondary Head Associate, (SHA) now the Association of Schools and College Leaders (ASCL) from 1999 – 2012. He has wide experience of governance in Primary, Secondary and Further Education and currently Chairs St. Philips Evans RC Primary School Governing Body.

Christian Mahoney - Chair of Governors

Christian Mahoney was appointed a Foundation Governor in 1999. Mr Mahoney is a Solicitor specialising in property law and is a former pupil of St David's Catholic College. Mr Mahoney is currently the Archdiocesan representative on the lay committee for spirituality, attached to the Bishop's Conference for England and Wales. Mr Mahoney is an experienced retreat giver on Ignatian Spirituality and holds retreats at St. David's Catholic College on a regular basis. 

Mr Mahoney is also a  committee member of the strategic alliance between St David's Catholic College, Cardinal Newman and  Coleg Cymoydd.

Philippa Marshall – Staff Governor

Mrs Philippa Marshall has been the Examinations Officer here at St David’s Catholic College for the past nine years. Mrs Marshall was elected Staff Governor in February 2014. Mrs Marshall said “I am really enjoying being part of a dynamic Governing body, contributing to steering the College towards a successful future addressing the challenging education changes were are face with”. Mrs Marshall is a member of the Community Committee.

Justin McCarthy – Foundation Governor

Justin McCarthy was appointed at St. David’s Catholic College as a Foundation Governor in September 2014. A graduate of Manchester University with a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and is a Chartered Engineer. Mr McCarthy was a Clinical Engineer in the NHS and retired in 2009 as the head of the Clinical Engineering Department in the Cardiff and Vale Trust. Mr McCarthy now does consultancy work and is very involved in international safety standards for medical equipment. Mr McCarthy is a member of the Community and Audit Committees.

David McLees - Foundation Governor

David McLees is a history graduate of both St Andrews and London Universities and has specialised in the study of historic buildings, especially those of the Middle Ages. He worked for 34 years in the civil service as an Inspector Of Historic Buildings based in London, Edinburgh and then, for two decades, in the Welsh Office in Cardiff where he led on the survey of listed buildings throughout Wales. He has recently been re-appointed by the Archdiocese to serve on the Historic Churches Committee for Wales and Herefordshire and is a recent convert to Catholicism.

Angela Minoli LLB – Foundation Governor

Ms Angela Minoli was appointed at St. David’s Catholic College as a Foundation Governor in November 2000.  Ms Minoli is a retired Company Director with many years experience in the travel industry and as a part-time Law and Business lecturer.  Ms Minoli is a parishioner of St Mary's, a member of its Music Group and a director of the Ave Maria San Damiano Association charity.  Ms Minoli is a member of the Search, Remuneration and Audit committees and in her third term of office.

John O’Connell TEP – Foundation Governor

John O’Connell was appointed at St. David’s Catholic College as Foundation Governor in September 2006. Mr O’Connell is the Senior Partner/Director of Howells Solicitors who have five other branches in South East Wales. Mr O’Connell specialises in advice relating to Wills, Wealth Administration and Estate Administration. Mr O’Connell brings wide legal, administrative, financial skills to the benefit of the College as well as extensive governance experience. Mr O’Connell has previously served as Chair of Governors for St. Illtyd’s RC High School. Mr O’Connell is the Chair of the FEGP and Personnel Committee and sits on the Search and Remuneration Committees.

Professor Sally Power – Foundation Governor

Professor Sally Power was appointed at St. David’s Catholic College as a Foundation Governor in February 2014. Professor Power is the Director of Research Cardiff School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University. Professor Power directs WISERD Education, (Welsh Institute of Social and Economic Research Date and Methods) a major Research project following the progress of 1,500 Children and Young People and the progress through their education. Professor Power is a member of the FEGP and Personnel Committee and Chairs the Curriculum Committee.  

Dr Kathy Seddon – Foundation Governor

Dr Kathy Seddon was appointed a Foundation Governor at St David's College in September 2011. Dr Seddon, a former experienced teacher and Head of Department, is also a former Churchill Fellowship Scholar. From 2003, Dr Seddon worked for the National College assisting in the delivery of a Continuing Professional Development for aspiring heads in the NC online environment towards the then mandatory qualification-NPQH. Dr Seddon is currently Chair of the Welsh Branch of the Churchill Fellowship and is a Member of the Welsh Livery Guild. Dr Seddon is a member of the Curriculum and Quality Committee.  

David Stone - Foundation Governor

David Stone was appointed a Foundation Governor to St David’s Catholic College in March 2016. He brings to the Governing Body substantial experience of Catholic education in the Archdiocese. He taught at St Joseph’s High School in Newport and St Illtyd’s High School in Cardiff before being appointed Vice-Principal to the newly established St David’s College. He subsequently became head teacher of Corpus Christi High School. He is now retired. Mr Stone is a member of the FEGP Committee.
