St David's College students about to start their DofE Silver Expedition

ABefore half term, our intrepid Duke of Edinburgh Group took part in their Silver qualifying expedition in the Wye Valley.

Over three days, the students tackled challenging routes, tested their navigation skills, and demonstrated brilliant teamwork and resilience.

We were lucky to have a break in the weather and had 3 lovely sunny days, although the nighttime temperatures were definitely a challenge!

Taking on the Challenge

On Friday, the students walked from just outside Tintern Abbey up to the first campsite near St Briavels.

After a day of walking, the teams faced the additional challenge of pitching their tents and preparing their evening meals in the dark and cold. Despite the conditions, everyone rose to the challenge and settled in for their first night under canvas.

On Saturday, the students walked cross-country to the next campsite near Coleford. The route was navigationally challenging, requiring students to work together, communicate effectively and draw on the skills they had developed during their training.

All the teams worked well together to reach the finish point.

Finishing on a High

On the final day, the students followed a route along the Wye Valley, passing through some beautiful sights, including the Kymin.

The spectacular scenery provided a fitting backdrop to the final leg of their expedition.

After a long day of walking, they arrived at the finishing point near Monmouth, having walked approximately 40km over the 3 days.

Congratulations to all 26 students who completed the expedition! They should be incredibly proud of their determination, teamwork and achievements. We wish them luck as they complete their final sections.
