Judges visiting St David's College to help students gain insight to Legal System and it's Careers

Students gained valuable insight into the Legal System and its careers this Monday through detailed presentations from Judges Davies and Bennett. Delivering their presentations in the Mark Leighfield Theatre, they explored key topics in Law, Criminology and Sociology.

A central focus of the presentation was the role and responsibilities of an Employment Judge. Students learned how these roles fit into the broader legal framework, including employment law and the resolution of workplace disputes. The judges also shared valuable insights into the career pathways within the legal profession with the aspiring future lawyers and criminologists of our community.

The presentation expanded upon judicial independence, ethics, and impartiality. These are fundamental principles that maintain public trust in the legal system. These themes were examined from a sociological perspective, enabling learners to understand how checks and balances contribute to fair and unbiased legal outcomes.

The judges also explored the social and economic factors that often contribute to employment disputes. This topic highlighted issues such as inequality, workplace power dynamics, and broader societal justice. This presentation encouraged students to reflect on the human impact of legal decisions.

Bringing theory to life, Judges Davies and Bennett shared case studies of complex tribunal decisions, helping learners contextualise legal principles in real-world scenarios. These showcased the challenging nature of judicial decision-making and demonstrated how law is integral to everyday life.

Learners had the chance to try on the official judge’s attire, complete with the iconic and extravagant white peruke wigs. Bringing smiles all around, making the day even more memorable for our learners.

Overall, the visit provided learners with a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the legal system, inspiring future lawyers and criminologists within our college community. This opportunity enhanced their academic understanding and deepened their appreciation of the law’s role in shaping a modern-day fair society.
