Giving time to others is one of the most powerful lessons a student can learn, helping them grow while building a stronger, more connected community.

St David’s College is committed to giving students the best chance of success in life. That means providing top-class education alongside meaningful experiences beyond the classroom.

The recent Volunteer Fair did just this, highlighting a wide range of student volunteering opportunities and promoting greater community engagement across Cardiff.

Why should students volunteer?

Students may have a lot on their plates, but even so, they shouldn’t miss out on the incredible experiences and skills they can gain through student volunteering opportunities in and around Cardiff. The Volunteer Fair demonstrated just how accessible and rewarding volunteering can be.

Working with community groups encourages strong community engagement while helping students develop key life skills, make new friends, and build networks that could support them later in their careers.

It is also an excellent way for learners to improve their CVs, work towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award, and add that extra strength to their personal statements before applying to universities across the country.

By attending the Volunteer Fair, students were able to explore the many ways volunteering can support their future ambitions.

Volunteering opportunities

The well of the main hall was packed with incredible organisations offering diverse student volunteering opportunities across a wide range of sectors.

Marie Curie, for example, provides volunteers with the chance to support patients and families at Penarth Hospice. This is a meaningful way to contribute to the local community while reducing some of the fear that may be associated with end-of-life care.

CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) provided information about how students could volunteer to help some of the most in need across the world.

Parkrun was signing up students to help at their Saturday morning events. Not only do these runs encourage health and wellbeing, but they also strengthen teamwork and organisational skills while supporting local community engagement.

Students were also able to speak with Help for Heroes and South Wales Police about volunteering roles that develop leadership, responsibility and communication skills.

An eye-opening event

The Volunteer Fair at St David’s College was an incredibly valuable experience for students. It showcased the variety of student volunteering opportunities available across Cardiff and reinforced the importance of community engagement.

These experiences will play a huge part in developing students’ personal and professional skills. So, if you’re wondering whether you should volunteer, go and do it.
