students with certificates from speech competition

Confidence took centre stage at St David’s last month, as students took part in a prestigious public speaking competition.

Organised with the Cardiff Circle of Catenians, the event gave eight learners the chance to step outside their comfort zones and deliver a speech to an audience, speaking in front of peers, staff, and guests.

Our students delivered speeches that were not only brilliantly prepared but also personal, sharing thoughtful ideas and experiences. They created an incredibly supportive atmosphere, encouraging one another throughout the event. They listened carefully, applauded each speaker, and helped foster a real sense of shared confidence across the room.

Among the participants were Elli Lo Celso, Betsi Seward, Chloe Whittington, Evangeline Orrel, Daniel Ulanmo, Maysarah Al Nayli, Zach Ahmed, and Abi Gingell.

The group’s hard work was clear to see throughout the day and was a shining example of the brilliant minds we have here at St David’s, as well as the effort that had gone into preparing for the competition.

Abi Gingell, Zach Ahmed, and Maysarah Al Nayli emerged as the top three winners, securing first, second, and third place, respectively, after a closely contested event.

Students’ families and friends supported the event, adding to the atmosphere and showing how much these college events mean to the wider community, with many staying throughout to hear each speaker.

Staff played an important role in making the day a success, both in the lead-up and on the day itself. Marie Nichols and Helen Fisher helped organise the event and worked closely with the Catenians, while Upper Sixth leaders from the Debating Society and the Honours Department supported students in preparing for the competition, ensuring they felt confident going into the day.

Catenians & St David’s

The Catenians Public Speaking Competition remains a strong example of the partnership between St David’s College and the wider community.

It gives students the chance to try something new, build confidence, and take on a real challenge in a supportive environment.

It also gives young speakers the chance to step forward, find their voice, and make themselves heard.
