February was exciting for our students as they showcased their talents and expertise at the Inspiring Skills Wales Competitions, gaining valuable experience across various industries. Their hard work and dedication were evident; we are incredibly proud of their achievements!
Heli Alyoussef and Fariha Diya participated in the Health and Social Care competition at Neath Port Talbot College in Margam. Their patient care skills were tested, receiving positive feedback from the competition staff. The experience was particularly valuable in preparing them for upcoming university interviews. Ceri Channon supported them in their training, who is the College’s Healthcare Vocations Champion, and a qualified nurse and midwife.
Harlie Nedrud, Angharad Rodriguez Jones, Molly, and Kadie participated in the Forensic Science competition at the University of South Wales (USW) state-of-the-art crime scene house. They engaged in tasks such as collecting evidence, lifting fingerprints, and analyzing samples in the lab—all while donning official crime scene suits! This hands-on experience offered insight into potential career paths in forensic science. Tim Raggett and Laura Breslin expertly guided them through the preparation and application.
A brand-new competition for 2025, the Lab Technician event took place at USW’s Pontypridd Campus. Students Shada, Aurelia, and Amber participated to gain practical experience in a laboratory environment. Staff member Bafreen Salih provided preparatory training and even served as a judge for the competition. This opportunity has given the college valuable insight into how students can better prepare for next year’s event.
Catherine represented the college in the Enterprise competition, where participants developed a business plan for an innovative idea. Her concept—a sustainable fashion styling business focused on recycling and sourcing pre-loved clothing—impressed the judges. Michela Bloomfield, from Business Wales, and the college’s Enterprise Champion Sandra Brewster supported her in refining her business plan.
Will Everitt, Daniel, and Dylan took on the Coding competition at USW in Newport. The task involved programming a text-based solution to meet specific requirements, enhancing their problem-solving skills. The event proved to be a fantastic learning opportunity. Staff member Greg Rees supported their preparation through Computer Science lessons and the college coding club.
One of the newest competitions in 2025, the IT Support Technician category, saw student Will Landricombe participate. With his own IT support business already underway, this competition allowed him to test his skills against other learners in the field. IT Systems Administrator Arran Byron mentored him.
Students Thabo Mhlanga, Maks Figurski, and Adam Viju competed in the Net Zero competition at Pembrokeshire College. Their challenge was to develop a community-based solution to help meet the Welsh Government’s Net Zero targets. Thabo, eager to improve on his 2024 bronze medal, worked alongside his teammates to deliver an impressive presentation before industry judges. Thabo, Maks and Adam brought their ideas to life with the support of Sandra Brewster and Sarah Reypert.
After weeks of anticipation, a watch party was held at the college on Thursday, March 13, to celebrate the participation and achievements of all students. It was an inspiring event highlighting how the competition helped students grow in confidence and build essential skills for their futures.
