St David’s Catholic College staff came together in the week before Christmas for a meaningful fundraising initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds to support homelessness initiatives, including the vital work of the Huggard Centre in Cardiff. Over £2500 was raised for this worthy cause thanks to many generous donors, including a £250 donation from local organisation, Horbury Southwest.
Staff participants of St David’s Catholic College gave up home comforts for the night, engaging in a Sleep Out Event on-site from 8 pm to 8 am. While the Sleep Out Event did not aim to replicate the harsh realities faced by those sleeping rough, the experience provided a small glimpse into the challenges of giving up home comforts.
Participants braved the elements on the outdoor terrace of the George Stack Centre for Learning. “While it’s impossible for us to fully grasp the loneliness and desperation many people face each night, this experience deepened our empathy and reinforced our commitment to helping those vulnerable in our community,” said participant, Mrs McLaren.
Before settling in for the Sleep Out Event, staff distributed bags of food items and essentials to homeless individuals in Cardiff city centre. Over 50 bags were distributed to those in need amid torrential rain and wind, shining a spotlight on the significant challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness.
The Huggard Centre also played a key role in the lead-up to the event, with staff speaking to students during Pastoral Programme sessions at St David’s Catholic College. These discussions inspired learners to take action by participating in Christmas Jumper Day, raising additional funds for the cause. The dedication and compassion shown by students highlight the importance of collective action in addressing social issues.
Reflecting on the success of the fundraising initiative by both staff and learners, St David’s Catholic College emphasises that small actions, when united by purpose, can create meaningful change. The partnership with the Huggard Centre has strengthened the College’s commitment to tackling homelessness in Cardiff.
Well done to all involved in the Sleep Out Event, including Fr Benny Dennis, Kane Amos, Olivia McLaren, Matthew Miller, Liz Newham, Yvonne Prescott, Rhian Hughes, Alex Jackson, Kahina Hammoudi, Lorraine Ledentu, Paul Smith, Philippa Marshall, Mel Holmes, Haley Hughes, Matt Todd, Estelle Daly, and Rhys Tranter.
This initiative showcases the power of compassion, community, and action in making a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals.
