Red seats in a cinema

From the classroom to the film industry, one of our students is already helping shape how films are classified in the UK.

We are incredibly proud of Bethan Carter, a Lower Sixth Media student at St David’s College, for her achievement.

She secured a place on the British Board of Film Classification’s Youth Panel through a competitive national process.

The panel brings together just 44 young people from across the UK to share their views and help inform how films are age-rated and how film classification works in practice.

Bethan’s achievement

Bethan, a Media student, first learned about the BBFC and film classification through her course at the college, before carrying out her own research into the organisation.

Applying to join the BBFC Youth Panel involved a competitive process, including submitting a video answering questions about film and attending an interview.

Her studies played an important role in preparing her.

“Without that lesson on regulation, I wouldn’t even know about the company and all of the jobs that have to be done before a film is officially released.”

Bethan then travelled to London to begin her work on the British Board of Film Classification Youth Panel.

A trip to London

Bethan recently travelled to London to begin her work on the panel. During the visit, she took part in a film reclassification activity, working with other panel members to decide what rating a film should receive.

She also had the opportunity to speak with respected interviewer Ali Plumb and ask questions about his work in the film industry.

Bethan later met BBFC president Natasha Kaplinsky, who spoke about the purpose of the Youth Panel.

Looking ahead

Bethan will continue her work with the panel over the coming months, contributing to discussions and gaining further insight into how film classification operates.

Bethan’s achievement is something we are extremely proud of and highlights how students at St David’s College can apply their learning in real-world settings.
