Former students Aisha and Awais Saeed are shining examples of how dedication, resilience, and the proper support can pave the way to success.

Their journeys from A-levels to degree apprenticeships and professional careers serve as an inspiration to current students considering their future paths.

Making the Most of College Life

Both Aisha and Awais took full advantage of the opportunities available at St David’s.

Aisha studied Media Studies, Art, Business Studies, and the Welsh Baccalaureate. Her college experience was enriched through opportunities like the Trading Places competition, where she developed key teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. The support from the careers team was invaluable in helping her refine applications for UCAS and the prestigious Network75 degree apprenticeship scheme.

Awais pursued Mathematics, Physics, Business, and the Welsh Baccalaureate. His lecturers ensured he learned and understood the material, preparing him for real-world applications. The Launchpad team helped him develop his application skills, build his CV, and gain valuable extracurricular experiences, including work experience at Arup and participation in the Engineering Education Scheme Wales.

Preparing for the Future

Aisha and Awais emphasise the importance of proactive preparation for life beyond college. Their top tips for students include:

  • Engage in extracurricular activities: Universities and employers look beyond academic grades. Awais honed his communication skills by volunteering at Radio Platform. At the same time, Aisha gained business experience through Trading Places and part-time jobs.
  • Stay ahead with applications: Apprenticeship and university deadlines differ, so keeping an eye on platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, and Find an Apprenticeship is crucial.
  • Embrace resilience: Awais applied over 120 times before securing his apprenticeship, and Aisha faced multiple rejections before landing her Network75 opportunity. Their message? Learn from setbacks, seek feedback, and keep going—yes, it can make all the difference.
  • Utilise resources like Barclays LifeSkills: Practicing interview skills and preparing for assessment centres can significantly boost confidence and success rates.

Where Are They Now?

Since leaving St David’s, both Aisha and Awais have flourished in their careers.

Awais is completing a BSc in Digital and Technology Solutions (Cyber Security) at the University of South Wales while working for Future PLC (owners of Go. Compare, Marie Claire, and Tom’s Guide). His apprenticeship has allowed him to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced global company, alongside earning industry-leading qualifications such as CompTIA Security+ and (ISC)² Certified in Cybersecurity.

Aisha graduated with a BA in Business and Management from USW through the Network75 scheme, gaining five years of experience in financial services. Her hands-on work in Robotic Process Automation and digital transformation projects positioned her for a tech career, and she is now a software engineer in the public sector.
