Jake Laycock Degree Apprenticeship Story

Choosing St David’s Catholic College

My name is Jake Laycock. After completing my GCSEs at Cardinal Newman Comprehensive School, St David’s Catholic College was the natural next step. I pursued A-levels in Computer Science, Mathematics, and English Literature, achieving A* A* A. These subjects expanded my knowledge and sharpened my skills, preparing me for the professional world. The opportunities I embraced beyond the classroom strengthened my applications for Degree Apprenticeships.

Starting My Degree Apprenticeship at CGI

After Further Education, I joined CGI as a Degree Apprentice while studying for a BSc in Applied Software Engineering at Swansea University. My schedule balanced four days of practical work at CGI with one day of university study. I chose this route to gain hands-on industry experience alongside academic learning. The Degree Apprenticeship offered the best of both worlds—earning a salary, securing full funding for my degree, and building valuable experience from day one.

CGI’s programme stood out for its strong Early Careers focus, offering dedicated support and excellent career prospects. The partnership with Swansea University allowed me to study and work locally, gaining industry exposure while staying close to home. Over three years, I contributed to client-facing projects in banking, financial markets, and the automotive sector. My work included financial transaction systems, fraud detection, and vehicle recall management. From the beginning, I was entrusted with real-world tasks—developing new features, fixing bugs, and delivering impactful software solutions.

Graduating and Transitioning into a Full-Time Role

In 2024, I graduated with First Class Honours and three years of industry experience, seamlessly transitioning into a full-time Software Engineer role at CGI—all without student debt. Unlike traditional graduates searching for jobs, I was already embedded in my team, taking on greater responsibilities and progressing naturally. My Degree Apprenticeship was more than just a degree pathway; it was a launchpad for my career, giving me a competitive edge in the industry.

Advice for Future Degree Apprentices

For anyone considering a Degree Apprenticeship, I highly recommend it! My advice is to plan ahead and apply to as many programmes as possible. These opportunities are competitive, so maximizing your chances is crucial. Keep your options open—apply for multiple apprenticeships and secure a university offer as a backup. A Degree Apprenticeship can set you up for success, combining education with invaluable industry experience.
