Twelve Physics students had the unique opportunity to attend a space symposium at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay covering the ExoMars mission. They also witnessed the groundbreaking work carried out by researchers at Aberystwyth University.
A presentation in the Neuadd of the Senedd showcased the pivotal role in the ESA’s ExoMars mission that Aberystwyth Uni held. Mr Thomas, Director of Communications and External Relations, kick-started the event with insightful presentations from leading scientists and researchers.
Among the speakers were Mr Cefin Campbell (MS), Professor Huw Morgan, Professor Manuel Grande, Mr Gwen Roberts, and Dr Helen Miles. Their presentations explored the technical and complex aspects behind the ExoMars mission. One aspect included how the Mars rover collects sample data from the surface of Mars using its specially engineered wheels.
Learners were keen to see and interact with the full-size model of the ExoMars rover, constructed by Aberystwyth Uni. Quick to ask questions and take photos, learners discovered how the rover functions in Martian conditions. With the rover scheduled to land on Mars in 2028, the visit offered timely insight into future planetary exploration.
Additionally, learners explored their existing space research, including studies into space weather and instrumentation. Researchers included components from previous space missions to provide a hands-on experience for learners. This inspiring glimpse for learners into space science and planetary exploration was possible through the sponsorship of Mr Cefin Campbell (MS).
The event expanded learners’ understanding of physics in real-world contexts. Creating an opportunity for learners to engage with experts shaping the future of space exploration. This trip was an out-of-this-world experience that will likely inspire the future scientists of our college community.
