Sports teams at St David’s College are potentially at the best they have been for years.

This year’s Sports Awards honoured the outstanding achievements of our sports teams, celebrating this remarkable year.

Our Football Academy won the league (we’re champions!), our netball team had a great run, and our basketball academy has grown to the biggest it has ever been and continues to compete nationally. On top of that, next year will be a big year for rugby at St David’s College, after 10 years without a rugby team.

Netball

The netball squad celebrated an exceptional season, with Mei Saunders receiving the prestigious Player’s Player of the Year award, as voted by her teammates. Lucie Sturgess was recognised as Most Improved Player, showcasing tremendous development and impact on the court. The Coach’s Award went to Emily Blunt, highlighting her consistency, attitude, and influence throughout the year.

Basketball

In basketball, David Folorunsho was named Most Improved Player, which underlined his growth, shift of focus, and rising presence on the team. Curtis Walters won the Best Defensive Player award, reflecting his crucial role in the team’s resilience. The Most Valuable Player was awarded to Kobe Nhyira Amissah, whose leadership was pivotal across the season, outlining that having an effect on the court with points is one thing, but being a leader off the court is another.

Football

In female football, the Players’ Player of the Year was awarded to Sienna Stone. At the same time, Aimee Deacon claimed the Player of the Year title for her exceptional performance and contribution to the team’s success. The women’s team have shown dominance this year, and it is fantastic to see young female footballers flourish at St David’s.

In the Tier 2 Male Football team, Josh Bobby was recognised by his teammates with the Players’ Player of the Year award, while Arios Atar was celebrated as Player of the Year for his commitment to the team.

In Tier 1 Male Football, Logan Bianchi Jones earned the respect of his teammates with the Players’ Player award. The Player of the Year accolade was awarded to Camille Miteleji for his goal-scoring ability and contributions. At the same time, the prestigious Vanguard Award — given for leadership, dedication, and influence — was presented to Alex Lidgey.

The sports awards were also a key moment for the boys to show off the league trophy – the first time in St David’s College history that the football team won the league.

We were also able to highlight the individual successes of students who have excelled in their own sports this year, such as Amy Partridge, who has had a fantastic year with Welsh Hockey, Harry and Alfie Osbourne, who represented British Colleges at the Cross-Country Championships, and Abel Mwenera who has been pivotal at centre-back with Welsh Colleges Football, even captaining the side in Italy.

We now look ahead to next season, with sports teams at St David’s looking to grow in strength and numbers, as we compete against other colleges and schools in Wales and the UK.
