Culture Day 2025 at St David's Catholic Sixth Form College

The most anticipated day of the year, Culture Day 2025, showcased 28 countries with a vibrant array of traditional outfits, flavourful global foods, music, stalls and fashion parades.

On 20th February, the sports hall became an electric and colourful celebration of diversity and heritage where students and staff embraced other cultures and their own.

Culture Day filled the sports hall with excitement as students and staff remembered the success of the previous two events. Countries featured from across the globe, spanning Africa, Asia, the Middle-East, South America, and Europe.

Students created a playlist of cultural songs that added the atmosphere to the sports hall. The Culture Day fashion parade snaked through the crowds, who split to create a walkway to the main stage. Hundreds of students erupted in celebration, waving flags as the parade walked the catwalk to the stage, celebrating in traditional outfits.

An unexpected highlight of the fashion parade was “Y Fari Lwyd,” an elaborate costume that took to the centre stage. This figure consists of a horse’s skull mounted on a pole and covered with a white canvas sheet. It is an old Welsh tradition, historically carried from door to door by its entourage during the New Year and leading up to the celebration of the ‘Celtic New Year’ on January 13th.

Mr Hazel & Mr Todd, who helped organise the event, noted: “The fashion parade and performances were fantastic! It provided a good snapshot of the cultural diversity and positive energy we have within our college community.”

There were several performances for Culture Day featuring Peter and Simon, who represented Nigeria with their song “Codedly.” Ncube and Fipaza, represented South Africa with their song “Asijike.” Waves of students chanted along to the energetic and culturally diverse songs, amplifying the atmosphere in the room.

In addition to the energy in the sports hall, there was a quiet area designated for neurodiverse learners and students with sensory sensitivities. This space was created for those who might find the active and animated energy in the hall too much.

External organisations

Several external organisations joined, including Careers Wales, Routes in Languages, Cardiff University, Urdd Gobaith Cymru, and Oasis Charity, which help refugees and asylum seekers integrate into our local communities. Additionally, we had several guests attending from Radio Cardiff, ETMAS, and Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Despite all the fun, this day serves as a reminder of the importance of diversity. It’s not just about sharing traditions, but importantly, it’s about learning from one another, breaking down barriers, and appreciating the individual uniqueness of our college community and its members.

St David’s College has always focused on serving its community. In recent years, this community has become increasingly culturally diverse, making St David’s the college with the most culturally varied student body in Wales for 16 to 19-year-olds.

Congratulations to everyone involved in planning and maintaining the event, especially Mr. Hazel, Mr. Todd, and the students who helped prepare and showcase their cultural heritage on stage and at the stalls. Your efforts have helped make this community a welcoming place for everyone.
