AS Learners Discover Spanish Heritage and Sustainable Practices in Barcelona

In July, 49 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (ASBW) and AS Spanish learners embarked on an exciting trip to Barcelona, the vibrant capital of Catalonia. The trip, organised by Nexgen Careers—a local company dedicated tobuilding a new generation of workforceby enhancing transferable skills—offered learners an enriching and immersive learning experience.

Learners engaged in various activities, such as developing proposals for international businesses and organisations, including Vermut (a social network for older generations) and Xtonnes (a company focused on accessible decarbonisation solutions). These activities instilled teamwork in learners, culminating in presentations of their innovative ideas.

Despite a few mosquito bites and the occasional screeching parakeet, students were warmly welcomed by the locals of Barcelona. The evenings were exciting activities, including visits to the iconic Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, where they enjoyed breathtaking views of the city.

These visits allowed students to explore Gaudí’s influence on the city’s architecture, and they also took a walking tour through the Gothic Quarter, captivated by local history and culture and engaging storytelling from knowledgeable guides.

A highlight of the trip was a local factory dedicated to sustainable practices, where learners discovered how discarded fruits and vegetables are repurposed for various food products. This visit sparked meaningful discussions that students continued during their Global Community lessons.

The evening featured a culinary workshop where students prepared a four-course Catalan meal, including dishes like gazpacho with tomato and garlic bread, a potato omelette, authentic paella, and a sweet crema catalana. The evening was an atmosphere of laughter, delicious food, and camaraderie.

Both staff and students discovered valuable learning experiences, deepening their understanding of Spanish culture.I found the trip incredibly enjoyable and interesting as it helped me learn more about Spanish culture and see some of the most famous sites in the world!shared Sienna, an AS Spanish student.

ASBW students Cohen, Dan, and Rhys added:It was an amazing experience and a great opportunity to explore the city of Barcelona with friends while learning new skills. The highlight for me was visiting Park Güell and the Sagrada Familia.”

Staff were equally impressed, praising the learners for their enthusiasm and commitment, and expressing pride in how well the group represented St David’s College and its community values.
