Former student Hugo returned to St David’s College this week to speak with Media and Law students about life in the spotlight.
Hugo, who rose to national attention on the BBC hit show The Traitors, delivered an engaging session, sharing stories from the programme and reflecting on his career path since leaving the college over 30 years ago.

A former pupil of Corpus Christi and St David’s, Hugo left the college in 1992 before going on to study Law at the University of Cambridge. He has since built a successful legal career in England, Wales, and the Caribbean, a background that has added a fascinating perspective to his experience on a show built around strategy, persuasion, and deception.

During the session, Hugo spoke candidly about his time inside the Traitors’ castle, offering insights into the psychological challenges of the game, the friendships he made on the show, and how his legal training influenced his approach, as well as reflecting jointly on how amazing Claudia Winkleman is.

Media and Law learners had the opportunity to ask Hugo thoughtful questions about his career path, the realities of succeeding in law, and what it was like to see himself portrayed on national television. The discussion that followed highlighted the transferable skills across law, media, and communication—and the importance of confidence and adaptability. Learners will hopefully take these insights into their own careers as they pursue and make the most of every opportunity that comes their way.

The visit ended on a lighter note, with Hugo happily posing for selfies with students and chatting informally about his experiences, making the most of his return to familiar surroundings.

Hugo’s visit served as an inspiring reminder to learners of the diverse paths open to them after college, and how the foundations built at St David’s can lead to success across a wide range of industries — from courtrooms to prime-time television.
