Students will be given the opportunity to express themselves in Welsh, in a written and oral form. There will also be the opportunity to write creatively, read independently, respond to different texts and appreciate literary forms.
Students will have the opportunity to practise speaking Welsh with the class teacher, and other Welsh students. There may be an opportunity to visit Nant Gwrtheyrn, the National Language Centre in North Wales and to participate in extracurricular activities, e.g., Eisteddfodau.
AS Level (year 1)
Unit 1: Film and Oracy (35 min group oral examination)
Students will be expected to discuss the following:
– the film Patagonia
– the package they produced as coursework in Unit 2
Unit 2: Written coursework
Students are required to produce a Package as coursework, between 1,500 and 2,000 words, containing at least three extended pieces of written work in different formats.
Unit 3: Use of Language and Poetry (2 hr written exam)
Section A: Composite questions are set containing various types of linguistic exercises.
Section B: Three structured questions on the prescribed texts.
A Level (year 2)
Unit 4: Drama and Oracy (45 min group oral examination)
Students will discuss the following in groups of three:
– living through the medium of Welsh
– the play Crash
– specific themes which feature prominently in the various texts studied during the whole of the course. (Synoptic Assessment)
Unit 5: The Welsh Language in Society and Translanguaging (2 hr written examination)
Section A: The Welsh Language in Society
Composite questions are asked regarding the Welsh language in society.
Section B: Translanguaging
A written response in Welsh to an English article.
Unit 6: The Use of Language and the Short Story (2hr written examination)
Section A: The Use of Language
Composite questions are set including various types of linguistic exercises.
Section B: The Short Story
Students are expected to provide a critical analysis and a personal response to the content of one of the set texts, using appropriate terminology.
Welsh is spoken by nearly 30% of the population of Wales. It is a modern living language that is used on a daily basis in many vocations, including business, local government, the media, tourism, journalism, marketing, and politics.
6 GCSEs A* – C, including GCSE Welsh (2nd Language) at grade B or above through higher tier in all units (not a combination).
