Students get a window into filmmaking at the British Film Institute in London

On Friday, November 10th, 48 of our AS and A2 learners attended the British Film Institute in Southbank, London for a conference centred around one of their film sets of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958).

This experience provided our learners with a first-hand glimpse into the intricacies of filmmaking, but also served as a window into the inner workings of the film industry. Students had the chance to speak with individuals working on the film set, who shared their passions for the industry, providing invaluable insights for our students and enhancing their understanding and practical knowledge.

Hitchcock’s masterpiece, “Vertigo,” is a timeless fever dream where a retired detective, Scottie, grapples with romantic fixation after a concerned friend requests him to investigate into his mysteriously behaving wife. This haunting yet impressive cinematic achievement stands the test of time, delving into the challenging terrain of the human psyche and our deepest desires. Naturally, this cinematic exploration sparked vast discussion amongst our learners, immersed in thought-provoking questions prompted by the film’s complex and twisting narrative.

The conference leader, Miss Ellis, commented: “St David’s students were exceptional in their behaviour and their responses to questions.”

Following the end of the conference, students had a two-hour window to explore Southbank under the guidance of their tutors. During this time, they immersed themselves in the local history and food, enriching their overall experience.

Well done to all of the students who enthusiastically embraced the trip to the BFI conference, actively engaging in question-and-answer sessions, and demonstrating eagerness to learn. The knowledge gained will undoubtedly play a large role in their academic pursuits throughout the year.
