In June, Wendy was presented an opportunity through the Launchpad to undertake a work experience placement at Cartref Porthceri Care Home for Older People in Barry. She described her time as eye-opening, giving new insight and appreciation for the Care working environment.
During her time at the Care Home, Wendy participated in comprehensive training and induction programs, which she found to be “incredibly successful” in kick-starting her career and acquiring valuable knowledge and insight into the care working world. She described the working environment as “supportive and positive,” fostering a constructive learning space throughout her placement, facilitated by Mr Davies, the Regional Project Consultant for Vale of Glamorgan.
Wendy demonstrated a keen interest in various tasks assigned to her and appreciated the clear instructions and balanced workload structure. Her days at the Care Home were often filled with meaningful interactions with the residents, which she found “incredibly rewarding.” This experience not only deepened her understanding of the care home environment and its challenges but also “significantly contributed to her personal and professional skills development,” highlighting the value of hands-on learning in a supportive setting.
Congratulations to Wendy on her successful placement. Her feedback from the Care Home was “overwhelmingly positive.” Following a week’s observation, Cartref Porthceri Care Home expressed their pleasure in having Wendy, saying “[she is] a bright and enthusiastic student from St David’s College. We are thrilled that Wendy expressed that she experienced her placement as both positive and rewarding”. This is a remarkable achievement, and we are thrilled that Wendy was able to make such a lasting impact on the care home and the project consultant for Vale of Glamorgan.
Mrs Brewster, Enterprise and Higher Education Officer at the Launchpad noted,
“We encourage our learners to find work experience as this can significantly contribute to their personal growth and development. We would like to thank all the staff at the home and the Vale Social Service Team for making this experience possible for Wendy. We are sure she will go on to make an excellent medical student.”
Wendy is now in her second year at St David’s College studying Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology, and she is hoping to study Medicine after completing her A-levels. We look forward to seeing her continued growth and progress both throughout her time at St. David’s and eventually beyond. Fantastic work, Wendy!
