Coming back after the Christmas break is HARD, so, St David’s Wellbeing Team hosted a special event to showcase the excellent internal and external support available within our community for exam stress, worries, and concerns from our learners.
Hundreds of learners took advantage of the opportunity to speak with organisations like Health Assured about the Wisdom App that is free and available to all learners, Young Carers Cardiff, who support young carers within the college community. Various external organisations participated and offered a wealth of wellbeing, support and activities at St David’s.
It was as if Taylor Swift walked into college when Cariad Pet Therapy brought their therapy dogs for stress relief. Learners leaped at the chance to meet Ani and Alfi.
The SWP Mounted Police Unit showcased their police horses outside gathering attention of many learners eager to stroke them – some more relunctantly than others!
Safeguarding and Welfare Manager/Young Carer Lead, Ms Turner, noted: “The students showed a strong interest in the stalls. So, I saw lots of them speaking with our visitors, but the therapy dogs and police horses excited the learners the most at college.”
Local PCSOs, the Cardiff Young Carers team, NYAS (National Youth Advocacy Service), Platform Counselling Service, Wisdom, and CAVDAS (Cardiff and Vale Drug and Alcohol Service) contributed to the event. They shared valuable resources with guides on handling exam-related stress. For some attending organisations, this marked their first time at St David’s, allowing them to establish new connections within our community and enabling learners to explore additional support options.
In attendance was Adam Rees, CEO of The Huggard Centre, who was presented the £2,187 cheque raised from St David’s College’s “Sleep Out to Help Out.” The Huggard Centre provides incredible support for the people experiencing homelessness in Cardiff, adding a meaningful touch to the occasion.
The dedicated efforts of external agencies and our college staff made this event a success. Thank you to everyone who participated in organising and creating a memorable experience for our college community.
