Students from a ranging mixture of subjects transported audiences back in time with their electrifying production of “Back to the 80’s.”
The vibrant performance, led by a talented student cast and crew, offered a nostalgic journey through the iconic era of retro pop culture, showcasing the essence of high school life, love, and timeless hits that defined the decade.
The play’s synopsis, a tale of love, friendship, and rivalry set against the backdrop of high school politics and teenage angst, resonated with our community, offering a relatable narrative infused with humour and passion. From the budding romance between Corey and Tiffany to the comedic antics of the class bully, Michael, and the quirky dynamics of a fictional school’s faculty, the story captured the essence of adolescence with authenticity and charm.
The production included 35 dedicated students alongside a dynamic college band of 5, who brought to life vibrant characters and memorable moments of senior years at the fictional William Ocean High School. With its infectious energy and catchy tunes, the musical was a delightful experience, capturing the essence of the 80s in a spectacular showcase of song and dance.
One of the standout moments of the performance was the intense duet of “500 Miles,” featuring Ethan and Harry as Corey Jr. and Michael, competing for the affections of Tiffany, portrayed by the talented Rebecca. Their passionate rendition encapsulated the emotional depth of the characters they portrayed, leaving a lasting impression throughout the musical.
The grand finale numbers of Act 1 and Act 2, including “Man in the Mirror” and “Walking on Sunshine,” presented by the full student ensemble, we’re undeniably the highlights of the show. The infectious energy and exuberance of these performances captured the spirit of the era, transporting us back in time.
Directed by Miss Chappell, musical direction by Miss Edwards and choreographed by Mr Crowley, their efforts toward this production provided an inclusive opportunity for all students to participate, irrespective of their academic interests. Through their involvement in performance or backstage roles, students developed essential and creative skills such as resilience, teamwork, communication, and expression, fostering a sense of camaraderie and community within the college.
Mr Crowley stated that, “all the students worked hard during the 4-month rehearsal process, but especially in the boot camp performance days”, where students studied and altered their performances under the guidance of their mentors. The result was a polished and playful production that showcased the immense talent within St. David’s Community.
